Rashidi Ladoja Poised to Become Next Olubadan Following Olakulehin’s Passing

Oba Olakulehin, who passed away after a brief illness, was a prominent figure in the traditional hierarchy of the ancient city. His passing marks the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter in the royal leadership of Ibadan, one of Nigeria’s most culturally rich and historically significant cities.
Rashidi Ladoja, a former governor of Oyo State and respected statesman, is next in line according to the well-structured and time-honored succession system unique to the Ibadan chieftaincy. The Ibadan traditional system is unlike many in Nigeria, operating on a rotational basis between two lines: the civil and military. Ladoja, who has steadily risen through the ranks over several decades, now stands at the cusp of becoming the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland.
Though not yet officially crowned, the path ahead appears clear. Tradition dictates that the Olubadan-in-Council, composed of high-ranking chiefs, will convene to formally ratify his ascension and forward their recommendation to the Oyo State Governor for approval. Once confirmed, Ladoja will be installed in a ceremony rich with cultural significance and historic symbolism.
A seasoned politician and businessman, Ladoja’s anticipated reign is expected to bring a blend of modern insight and deep respect for traditional values. His potential leadership is being met with optimism by many residents and traditionalists who see his experience and temperament as assets to the throne.
As Ibadan mourns the passing of Oba Olakulehin, preparations are already underway for the royal transition. The city awaits the official announcement that will usher in a new monarch and continue the legacy of a throne that has stood as a symbol of unity, leadership, and heritage for cent
uries.
