Igboho Requests Removal From Federal Government’s Wanted List; Give Reasons

Chief Sunday Adeyemo, widely recognized as Sunday Igboho and a key advocate for Yoruba self-determination, has formally appealed to the federal government to lift the designation that lists him as a wanted individual.

The activist made this plea while visiting the palace of Oba Francis Alao, the Olugbon of Orile Igbon in Oyo State, on Tuesday. During the visit, Igboho sought the traditional ruler’s assistance in appealing to the government on his behalf.

He emphasized his willingness to contribute positively to efforts aimed at tackling the escalating insecurity in the South-West region, should the ban against him be lifted. Igboho also highlighted the ongoing violent attacks by armed herdsmen on local farmers, cautioning that if the issue is left unresolved, the violence may worsen significantly.

Igboho rose to national prominence in early 2021 when he issued a seven-day ultimatum demanding that armed herdsmen leave Ibarapa land in Oyo State following a series of brutal assaults attributed to these groups. His firm stance against these attacks earned him considerable public backing but also drew attention from federal authorities.

In July 2021, the Department of State Services (DSS) labeled Igboho a wanted man after conducting a raid on his residence in Ibadan, accusing him of stockpiling weapons and inciting unrest. The operation resulted in the deaths of two individuals and the detention of over 30 others, who were later transferred to Abuja by DSS operatives.
