Peter Obi: Tinubu Is Crippling Political Parties and Cracking Our Democracy

A few weeks ago, President Trump referred to our nation as “now disgraced,” a comment that sparked widespread anger. But how can we truly argue with him when, in the span of just one week, 25 citizens were abducted and a senior military officer—along with several colleagues—lost his life? And now, we are confronted with yet another disturbing terrorist incident in Kwara State. At a time when unity is urgently needed, we remain distracted by infighting, party battles, and unnecessary conflicts.
Anyone observing developments within the PDP, Labour Party, SDP, and other political groups will notice the same pattern—crises fueled by a government that should instead be fostering national cohesion during these difficult times.
I recall a defining moment during the administration of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. When my party faced internal turmoil, he directed the then INEC Chairman, Professor Maurice Iwu, to ensure that every political party—whether in power or in opposition—remained stable. He stressed that democracy thrives when all parties operate freely and lawfully, not when they are weakened.
Sadly, what we are seeing today is completely different. The current government appears more focused on destabilizing political parties than on strengthening democratic institutions—trying to splinter the PDP, Labour Party, SDP, and others.
In true democracies, opposition voices are valued, elections reflect the genuine will of the people, and governance is inclusive, paving the way for peace and development.
