Nnamdi Kanu Rejects Life Sentence, Demands Justice Review, Appreciates Supporters — Kanunta

Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has rejected the possibility of a life sentence, insisting instead on a full review of the legal processes surrounding his ongoing trial. His brother, Kanunta Kanu, revealed this in a statement on Sunday, noting that the IPOB leader remains steadfast in his call for fairness, transparency, and justice.
According to Kanunta, despite the difficult circumstances, Kanu has maintained a resolute spirit and is determined to pursue what he describes as “a lawful and just resolution” to the charges brought against him. He stressed that accepting a life sentence would amount to validating what he believes is a deeply flawed legal process — one he insists must be revisited.
Kanunta explained that Kanu has renewed his appeal for the judiciary to review all actions taken in his case, including issues relating to his extraordinary rendition from Kenya, alleged violations of his fundamental rights, and procedural irregularities that have been raised by his legal team over the years.
He added that, while the legal battle continues, Nnamdi Kanu has expressed heartfelt gratitude to supporters across Nigeria and beyond, acknowledging the unwavering solidarity they have shown throughout his detention. Kanunta noted that Kanu is especially encouraged by the continuous advocacy from civil society groups, legal experts, and community leaders calling for a fair and just resolution to his case.
“His message is one of resilience,” Kanunta said. “He appreciates everyone who has stood by him and continues to believe in justice. He has not lost hope, and he urges supporters to remain peaceful and law-abiding as the legal process unfolds.”
The statement comes amid renewed public debate about the prolonged nature of Kanu’s trial and the broader implications for national unity and rule of law. Observers say his rejection of a life sentence signals a clear intention to keep challenging the charges until due process is fully addressed.
As the legal proceedings resume, Kanunta emphasised that the family remains hopeful that the courts will give full attention to the issues raised and deliver a judgment that upholds justice, constitutional rights,
and fairness.
