The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that his political future would be destroyed if Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara succeeds in securing a second term in office.

Wike made the statement on Saturday while addressing political stakeholders in Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State, stressing that a firm decision has already been taken regarding the state’s political direction ahead of 2027.

According to the former Rivers governor, backing Fubara again would amount to a costly political error.

“We have already made our decision as far as President Bola Tinubu is concerned. As for the other one, there is no chance,” Wike said. “If we repeat the same mistake, then we might as well bury ourselves politically. I won’t allow that to happen again.”

Wike’s remarks signal a renewed escalation in his public rift with Fubara, which intensified after the governor defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) last month. The FCT minister accused Fubara of violating the terms of the peace agreement that preceded the lifting of the emergency rule in Rivers State and facilitated his return to office.

Earlier in the week, Wike had stated that what he described as a “leadership error” in Rivers would be corrected in the 2027 elections, adding that he would later disclose details of the peace deal that reinstated Fubara. He stressed that leadership should reflect the will of the people, not personal ambition.

“We will not repeat the same mistake at the state level in 2027,” Wike said. “The time will come when everything will be explained.”

### **‘Backing Tinubu Won’t Save Fubara’**

Speaking a day earlier at a stakeholders’ meeting in **Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area**, Wike dismissed claims that Fubara’s support for President Tinubu would guarantee him re-election. He noted that he personally supported Tinubu long before Fubara’s move to the APC.

“If you succeeded with the first arrangement, do you think the same strategy will work again?” Wike asked. “There can’t be two markets on the same day.”

He warned those assuring the governor that loyalty to Tinubu would automatically secure his political future that they were misleading him, stressing that all loyalists had resolved to work fully for the president—but not at the expense of correcting past errors.

Wike further criticised Fubara’s leadership style, questioning his relationship with local government chairmen, lawmakers, and federal representatives, and casting doubt on his capacity to effectively lead the state.

Reacting to Fubara’s New Year message in which the governor dismissed his comments as mere “noise,” Wike insisted that Fubara owed his emergence as governor to him, despite lacking widespread popularity at the time.
