DSS Detains Man Over Alleged Threat and Attack on Peter Obi in Edo
Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have taken into custody a man suspected to be linked to the recent shooting incident involving the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, in Benin City, Edo State.
The incident occurred on February 24 during a political meeting in Benin. Armed individuals reportedly opened fire at the gathering where Obi and other political figures were present. Among those at the event were former Edo State governor, Chief John Oyegun, along with leaders and members of the opposition party. Fortunately, no lives were lost in the attack.
Following the incident, a man identified as Udeme Monday Stephen allegedly posted messages on his social media account, claiming responsibility for the attack and issuing further threats against Obi. In his online statements, he suggested that Obi had narrowly escaped harm in Benin and warned of possible future attacks, particularly referencing a potential visit to Rivers State.
Security sources revealed that immediately after the threatening posts surfaced online, DSS officials launched a discreet investigation. Using digital forensic methods, the agency tracked the suspect and subsequently arrested him.
According to reports, the suspect is a 26-year-old teacher at a secondary school in Eliozu, located in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State. Investigations reportedly linked him to the online threats, leading to his detention.
A security official emphasized that the DSS, as part of its mandate to protect national security and public figures, acts promptly on credible intelligence regardless of ethnic or religious background. The agency is said to be continuing its investigations, and the suspect is expected to face legal proceedings in court.
