Archbishop Onaiyekan: Why Young people cannot and should not be patient

Archbishop Onaiyekan
In the midst of ongoing protests and national uncertainty, Nigeria’s youth are increasingly vocal, calling for transformative action from those in power. Following International Youth Day last week, the focus is on the younger generation’s role in shaping the country’s future. Sunday Vanguard spoke with Emeritus Archbishop of Abuja, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, to discuss the potential of Nigeria’s youth and the responsibilities of leaders.
Onaiyekan commends the efforts of young people striving for peace and development and urges them to continue leveraging their values in pursuit of these goals. He emphasizes that the youth’s drive for change is crucial and historically significant.
On Nigeria’s Young People as Catalysts for Change:
“I applaud the young people who are dedicated to fostering peace and development. I encourage them to persist in their efforts, guided by their values.”
On Government’s Lack of Engagement with Youth:
“Young people are eager to contribute to the nation’s progress but have not received sufficient attention or encouragement from those in power.”
On the Issue of Patience:
“Youth should not be expected to remain patient. Their drive for change is vital, and they have historically been at the forefront of transformative movements.”
On Effective Engagement with Youth:
“Leaders need to recognize the natural ambition of young people and create opportunities for them to succeed. It is crucial to listen to their concerns and foster an environment conducive to their growth.”
On Economic Recovery and Youth Involvement:
“We need to foster economic growth by creating opportunities for young people to use their skills and talents. The government must genuinely listen to their needs and provide real support rather than superficial measures.”
On the Authenticity of Government Programs:
“Many young people feel that government programs are not effective. We need genuine efforts and practical support, not just symbolic gestures like distributing small amounts of money.”
On Addressing Protests with Initiatives like CNG Buses:
“I am skeptical that initiatives such as CNG buses will resolve the underlying issues. We should focus on utilizing our resources to create meaningful opportunities for the youth.”
