Crisis Deepens in Yelwata and Daudu, Over 200 Killed; Woman Lament for her 5 Children killed

The recent attack on Yelwata community in Benue State has left countless families in mourning, displaced, and in urgent need of assistance. Among the many heart-wrenching stories emerging from the tragedy is that of a woman who lost five of her children and her mother in a single night. The scale of devastation is overwhelming, and the suffering of survivors is deepening by the day.

In the aftermath of the violence, displaced residents from Yelwata and neighboring Daudu are now struggling to find safety and shelter. With no available transportation provided by the authorities, many—especially women and children—have been forced to walk long distances under harsh weather conditions, often without food, water, or medical care.

The situation has become so desperate that some displaced persons have begun stopping travelers along major roads, not out of malice, but in a desperate attempt to get the attention of the government and draw help to their suffering communities.

This is a humanitarian emergency that demands swift intervention. The State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) must urgently deploy vehicles and resources to evacuate affected individuals to safe locations. Continued delay risks worsening an already volatile situation, where desperation may give way to unrest.

Leaders at every level, including President Bola Tinubu, must recognize the gravity of this crisis. The people of Benue are calling for decisive action. Many believe the time has come for the federal government to declare a state of emergency in the state to enable rapid and sustained response.

The need is immediate. The pain is real. The time to act is now.
