Mocking: See How Sowore Mock Obasanjo for His Visit to Tinubu
Omoyele Sowore, a Nigerian activist, journalist, and politician, has run for the presidency of Nigeria, advocating for radical reforms and addressing systemic issues in the country. Here is an overview of his political journey and presidential campaigns:
Sowore is known for his activism and role as the founder of the online news platform Sahara Reporters, which is notable for its focus on corruption and human rights abuses in Nigeria.
Sowore first ran for president in the 2019 general elections under the platform of the African Action Congress (AAC). His campaign, tagged “Take It Back,” emphasized tackling corruption, improving security, and boosting the economy through innovative and youth-centered policies. Despite a vibrant campaign, he finished far behind the leading candidates, Muhammadu Buhari and Atiku Abubakar.
Sowore’s political journey has not been without challenges. Following the 2019 elections, he was arrested by the Nigerian government on charges of treason, money laundering, and cyberstalking President Buhari. His arrest was linked to his planned protests against the government, which he termed the “RevolutionNow” movement. His detention drew significant domestic and international criticism, highlighting issues of free speech and human rights in Nigeria.
Sowore announced his intention to run again in the 2023 presidential elections. Continuing with the AAC, his platform again focused on systemic reforms, anti-corruption measures, youth empowerment, and economic development. His campaign aimed to mobilize Nigeria’s significant youth population and address longstanding grievances about governance and socio-economic conditions.
