Road Accident: Nine killed, seven injured in Lagos-Abeokuta road crash

  1. Trunk accident

An early morning crash on Tuesday which occurred on the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway at the Kere Bridge in Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State resulted in the death of nine people while seven others were injured.

The crash involved a truck and a Mazda bus with the number plate SMK 808 YD.

The accident, blamed on excessive speed and route violation, reportedly caused the head-on collision between the truck and the Mazda bus.

The spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Florence Okpe, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists on Tuesday.

Okpe said that while the injured had been taken to the General Hospital, Ijaye, the bodies of the deceased had been deposited at the Lantoro Hospital, Abeokuta.

The statement partly read, “The fatal crash occurred at about 0800 hrs on the Lagos-Abeokuta route. A total of 17 persons were involved which comprised of seven male adult, nine female adults and one female.

“A total of seven persons were injured, which include five female adults, one male adult and one female child. Unfortunately, nine persons were recorded dead from the crash, five male adult and four female adult.”

Two vehicles were involved; a truck with no registration number black colour, and a white colour Mazda bus with registration number SMK808YD.”

Meanwhile, the Ogun Sector Commander of FRSC, Anthony Uga, has cautioned motorists against route violation and speeding, pointing out the dangers associated with the two critical offences.

Uga also advised motorists to adhere to traffic rules and regulations and noted that the road was a shared asset which users must use together.

The sector commander sympathised with the families of the victims, praying God to grant them the fortitude to bear the irreparable losses.
