Delta Police Apprehend Suspected Robbers and Cultist

The Delta State Police Command has announced the arrest of individuals suspected to be involved in armed robbery and cult activities.

In a statement made on Sunday in Asaba, the state’s Public Relations Officer, SSP Bright Edafe, detailed the events leading to the arrests.

On May 18, 2024, a resident of Ekpan Community (whose name is being withheld) reported to the police that he observed a young man dressed in black and carrying a black bag inside their compound. The resident raised an alarm, causing the suspect to flee. It was later discovered that the suspect had stolen their water pumping machine.

With the help of the community, police operatives apprehended Gift Newworld from Ekpan. After a thorough interrogation and investigation, the suspect led the police to his hideout in Ekpan. There, they recovered the stolen pumping machine, a locally made cut-to-size double barrel gun, and three live cartridges. Further investigation resulted in the arrest of Izobo Okwe, another member of the gang, who admitted ownership of the gun and his involvement in the gang.

In a separate incident, a 52-year-old chief was arrested for possession of ammunition. According to Edafe, a special team led by ASP Julius Robinson was deployed to Ughelli, where they searched the residence of Chief Oviri Onorigho, an accountant at Delta State Polytechnic in Oghara. During the search, a Baretta Pistol loaded with four rounds of live ammunition was found.

The chief was arrested immediately, and preliminary investigations suggested he might be a member of the Aiye confraternity. The suspect claimed he purchased the gun from an individual named Morrison (currently at large) for N250,000, stating it was for his personal protection.
