The German government has launched the “Opportunity Card,” a new initiative designed to attract skilled workers from non-European Union (EU) countries, including Nigeria.
The application portal for the Opportunity Card lists Nigeria as one of the eligible countries of residence.
The Opportunity Card is a type of residence permit that allows individuals from non-EU countries to enter Germany to seek employment. The card is valid for up to one year and can be extended if the holder secures qualified employment, enabling them to obtain a further residence permit for continued job searching or employment.
Details of the Opportunity Card
To be eligible for the Opportunity Card, applicants must have their professional qualifications recognized either in Germany or in their home country. They must also demonstrate financial self-sufficiency, typically requiring proof of at least €1,027 per month, which can be provided through a blocked account or a declaration of commitment.
Opportunity Card holders can work part-time for up to 20 hours a week during their job search and can also take on trial jobs for up to two weeks to explore potential employment opportunities.
Eligibility Criteria
The Opportunity Card uses a points-based system with the following requirements:
– Completion of a degree or at least two years of state-recognized training.
– Proficiency in German at least at level A1 or in English at level B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
