Bandits
On Saturday night, bandits invaded the Dahjonu community in Millennium City, located in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State, kidnapping two journalists along with their families. The abducted journalists are Abdulgafar Alabelewe of The Nation and AbdulRaheem Aodu of Blueprint newspaper. Alabelewe currently serves as the chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Kaduna State.
The incident, confirmed by a relative of one of the victims, Taofeeq Olayemi, occurred around 10:30 pm. Olayemi reported that the assailants fired indiscriminately before kidnapping Alabelewe, his wife, and two of his children. Aodu and his wife were also taken, leaving behind their sick daughter.
Initially, the kidnappers seized Alabelewe, his wife, three children, and a girl staying with them. However, they later released the girl and one of the children, continuing with Alabelewe, his wife, and two of his children.
“They broke through the doors and windows, removing the burglary after scaling the fence,” Olayemi said, describing the harrowing event. “They first forced open Aodu’s door, taking him and his wife but leaving their sick daughter behind. Then, they entered Alabelewe’s house by climbing over the fence and directly into his bedroom.”
The community vigilantes arrived shortly after the bandits left, but the attackers had already fled. As of the time of this report, attempts to reach the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mansir Hassan, for comments were unsuccessful, as his phone was not connecting.
