Sowore Reacts to Claims of Protest Postponing

Omoyele Sowore

Omoyele Sowore, the human rights advocate and leader of the #RevolutionNow movement, has rejected claims that the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest has been postponed. Sowore addressed the rumors on Wednesday through his social media, denouncing the reports as false.

He stated: “DISREGARD THE FALSE ANNOUNCEMENT THAT THE #EndBadGovernance PROTEST HAS BEEN DELAYED. IT IS NOT TRUE! #nogoingback #DaysOfRage #RevolutionNow.”

Nigerians are scheduled to begin a ten-day demonstration starting August 1, aimed at expressing frustration with the economic difficulties caused by President Bola Tinubu’s policies and the general state of governance in the country.

Recently, an announcement suggested rescheduling the protest to October 1, 2024, to coincide with Nigeria’s Independence Day celebrations. However, Sowore, a leading figure in organizing the protest, has dismissed these claims as misleading.

There have been efforts by government supporters to dissuade or intimidate people from participating in the protests. For instance, a group of individuals affiliated with President Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) reportedly threatened traders in a prominent Lagos market on Tuesday. According to SaharaReporters, the group used a loudspeaker to intimidate vendors, warning of severe consequences for those participating in the demonstrations.

A video circulating on social media shows the thugs moving through the market, threatening traders with repercussions if they do not comply. One of the individuals in the video said, “We warn you not to participate in the protests. If your shops are closed, what will you do?” Adding, “We challenge anyone to join the protest on Thursday. Consider this a warning.”
