Over 400 Terrorists Still Missing Two Years After Kuje Jailbreak

Over 400 Terrorists Still Missing Two Years After Kuje Jailbreak

Two years after the Kuje Medium Custodial Centre in the Federal Capital Territory was attacked, more than 400 inmates, including several terrorists, remain at large.

Despite ongoing efforts by security agencies, these fugitives have not been recaptured. Data from the Nigerian Correctional Service’s website reveals that over 400 individuals who escaped during the jailbreak on July 5, 2022, are still unaccounted for, including members of Boko Haram.

The attack, claimed by the Islamic State in West Africa Province, resulted in the escape of over 900 inmates. Authorities quickly launched a manhunt, leading to the recapture of 421 inmates.

The identities of the remaining fugitives have been shared with the International Criminal Police Organisation and various security agencies. Concerns persist about the risks posed by these individuals still being at large.

Security expert Oladele Fajana, speaking to our correspondent, cited inadequate data management as a major obstacle in the recapture process. “A lack of a comprehensive and well-maintained database makes tracking and apprehending these escapees difficult,” he said.

Fajana also pointed to the challenge of porous borders, noting that escapees might easily cross into neighboring countries, complicating their recapture. He urged improved data management and border security to address these issues, emphasizing that a robust database would facilitate tracking and arresting individuals involved in criminal activities.
