Boko Haram: Borno Judge Released in Captivity: See the months of captivity

Justice Haruna Mshelia of the Borno State High Court has been freed after being held captive for two months. Mshelia was abducted by suspected Boko Haram militants on June 24 while traveling from Biu to Maiduguri with his wife, driver, and police escort. During the incident, the police escort was killed.

The news of Mshelia’s release was confirmed through a message on a WhatsApp group for Borno lawyers, which read, “Alhamdulillah, we have just received the news of Justice Haruna Mshelia’s release.” However, reports indicate that while Mshelia has been released, his wife and driver remain in captivity. The message urged continued prayers for their safe return.

Details surrounding the release, including whether a ransom was involved, have not been disclosed, and the police have yet to issue an official statement.

Hamza Zannah, Chairman of the NBA Maiduguri branch, confirmed the release to Humangle.

Justice Mshelia, who transitioned from private legal practice to the Borno State Judiciary in May 2012, was one of only two judges selected from private practice in the state. Borno State remains heavily affected by Boko Haram insurgencies, which have caused significant loss of life and displacement.
