Niger coup: PDP govs warn Tinubu to embrace diplomacy

Governors affiliated with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) announced on Tuesday that they have successfully resolved the ongoing internal conflicts within the party.

In an interview at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, the forum’s Chairman, Governor Bala Mohammed, confirmed that party stakeholders have agreed to lift all suspensions within the National Working Committee (NWC) and maintain the current status quo.

Mohammed explained that the governors, in collaboration with the National Assembly caucus and the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT), reaffirmed that there is no faction within the PDP. He stated, “All previous suspensions have been addressed, and everything has returned to normal under the acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, until the party’s leadership can further discuss the matter.”

He acknowledged that while every party faces challenges, including legal issues, there is no need to escalate misunderstandings. “Any rumors or misconceptions are incorrect,” he added.

Mohammed urged party members to prioritize unity and set aside personal grievances, emphasizing that individual conflicts should not create divisions.

When asked about the upcoming NWC meeting scheduled for October 24, he noted that the governors, BoT, and NWC would consider it collectively.

Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum also addressed reporters, stating there was no crisis within the party and attributing some tensions to individuals seeking to exploit the situation. He encouraged the media to avoid exaggerating the issues.

Responding to questions about the status of suspended NWC members Debo Ologunagba and Kamaldeen Ajibade, Damagum clarified that they remain in the party.

A communiqué issued following the PDP governors’ virtual meeting highlighted their careful approach to addressing issues, especially those tied to ongoing legal disputes. The statement, signed by Mohammed, reiterated the commitment to unity and the lifting of all suspensions.

The communiqué emphasized that there are no factions within the party and urged all members to focus on their responsibilities to foster growth and align with the ideals of the party’s founders.

The virtual meeting included governors from Rivers, Bayelsa, Edo, Oyo, Osun, Zamfara, Delta, Adamawa, Plateau, and Enugu states.

Recent developments reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) indicated that two factions had emerged within the NWC, each suspending key members for alleged disloyalty. The situation highlighted the need for the recent reconciliation efforts by the governors to restore stability within the PDP.
