Comedy: Basketmouth urges colleagues to stop begging for money on stage
Renowned Nigerian comedian Basketmouth has urged his fellow comedians, particularly newcomers, to refrain from asking for money during their performances. In a recent podcast, he voiced his concerns about this growing trend, which he feels undermines the integrity of stand-up comedy.
He stated, “To all the up-and-coming comedians, please stop begging for money on stage. Just perform your set, tell your jokes, and leave. It frustrates me to see how the art form is being diluted.” Basketmouth stressed the need for professionalism, emphasizing that comedians should concentrate on their material rather than soliciting cash from the audience.
“Why are you there hailing people and asking for money? If you need to beg, do it somewhere else,” he added.
Basketmouth also recounted a recent experience that intensified his frustration. “While performing, someone started throwing money at me, and it really annoyed me,” he shared, clearly exasperated by the interruption.
