2027: ADC Opens Its Doors to Obidients – Saliu Lukman

Mallam Salihu Moh. Lukman, a prominent figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has called on supporters of the Obidient movement to align with the ADC ahead of the 2027 general elections. Emphasizing unity among opposition forces, Lukman described the ADC and its growing coalition as a welcoming platform for those seeking change in Nigeria.
Speaking during a Tuesday morning interview on Channels TV, which was monitored in Abuja, the former APC National Vice Chairman (Northwest) urged various political groups to rally behind the ADC’s efforts to forge a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to Lukman, a fractured opposition only paves the way for another APC victory. “If we allow division among us, we are simply handing over the 2027 election to APC and President Tinubu,” he said.
He appealed specifically to Obidients and other progressive blocs to join the coalition, stressing that the ADC is open to all and ready to support whichever credible candidate emerges through a transparent primary process.
“Whether it is Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, or any other aspirant, once they emerge through a fair primary, the entire coalition will stand behind them,” Lukman affirmed. “The goal is to avoid repeating the missteps of past administrations and to build a more responsive and inclusive leadership.”
He emphasized that the ADC is committed to internal democracy and equity. “As of now, there have been no talks about who the coalition’s presidential candidate will be,” he clarified. “That decision will only be made after a proper democratic process within the party.”
Lukman highlighted that this commitment to process is what sets the ADC apart from traditional parties. “We’re testing whether our aspirants are true democrats—leaders who are willing to put national interest above personal ambition,” he noted.
Reflecting on his time in the APC, he expressed frustration with how power had concentrated in the hands of a few. “We trusted leaders in APC, and they turned into emperors. That cannot happen in the ADC. Here, leaders must remain accountable to party members.”
He concluded by stressing the importance of humility in leadership and the need for a new political culture. “We’re working hard to avoid creating another wave of arrogant leadership. The negotiation within the coalition is tough, but we are hopeful. The goal is to present a single, widely supported candidate capable of moving Nigeria forward.”
