See the Numbers Sentenced for Illegal Tree Cutting in Kano

A Magistrate Court in Normansland, Kano has sentenced two individuals for illegally cutting down a tree and engaging in environmental offences, contravening the state’s environmental regulations.
The Kano State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change disclosed in a statement that the two men — Salihu Mukhtar and his associate — were apprehended for unlawfully felling a tree along Jigawa Road in the Nasarawa Government Reserved Area (GRA), without the required permit.
Prosecuting counsel, Barrister Bahijjah Aliyu, presented evidence proving the duo had planned and executed the offence together, in violation of both the Kano Penal Code and Forestry Laws.
Magistrate Auwalu Yusuf, who presided over the matter, found them guilty and handed down the following judgment:
For conspiracy: Three months in prison or a fine of ₦20,000 each.
For illegal logging: Six months in prison or a fine of ₦50,000 each.
Reacting to the ruling, the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahiru Hashim, emphasized the state’s unwavering stance against illegal logging activities.
“Trees play a vital role in our ecosystem — they purify the air, support biodiversity, and help combat climate change. This judgment should serve as a clear warning that anyone found harming the environment will be held accountable,” he said.
Dr. Hashim also urged citizens to report any acts that threaten the environment to rel
evant authorities.
