NLC Accuses FG, State Governors of Exploiting Workers

NLC and TUC
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly criticized both the Federal Government and state governors, accusing them of eroding democratic values, suppressing dissent, and misappropriating workers’ hard-earned contributions.
Speaking at the 21st Rain School of the NLC in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, NLC President Joe Ajaero warned that Nigeria is veering dangerously close to authoritarianism. He emphasized that the current political environment is becoming increasingly hostile to workers’ rights and freedoms.
Ajaero highlighted that fundamental rights such as free expression, peaceful assembly, and active participation in governance are under threat—particularly for the working class.
He also condemned the growing restrictions on civil liberties and trade union activities, calling them deliberate attempts to silence labour voices ahead of the 2027 elections.
“Rather than focusing on governance and easing the burden of hardship on citizens, political leaders are already obsessed with electioneering,” Ajaero stated. “As a result, workers and everyday Nigerians are left to suffer under worsening economic conditions and insecurity brought on by poor leadership choices.”
