Senator Natasha to IGP: Reinstate My Security as I Resume Senate Duties

Senator Natasha to IGP: Reinstate My Security as I Resume Senate Duties

Senator Natasha H. Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, has formally informed the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) of her intention to return to her legislative role at the National Assembly, following a Federal High Court judgment that overturned her suspension from the Senate.

Despite previous warnings from the Senate leadership advising against her return, Senator Natasha is moving forward, citing her legal right to resume office.

In a letter dated July 21, 2025, and received by police authorities the same day, she referenced the court ruling in Suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/543/2024, which deemed her suspension unconstitutional and in breach of Section 63 of the Nigerian Constitution. The court directed that the Senate immediately reinstate her to continue representing the people of Kogi Central.

Currently serving as the Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and NGOs, and Vice Chair of the Committee on Steel, Senator Natasha highlighted the pressing need for the restoration of her police protection. She stressed that the absence of her official security detail poses a significant risk and could obstruct her from fulfilling her legislative duties effectively.

“I am requesting the urgent reinstatement of my security personnel,” she wrote. “My safety must be assured as I return to carry out the responsibilities entrusted to me by my constituents.”

Along with her request, Senator Natasha submitted a certified copy of the court’s judgment and urged the IGP to act swiftly in the interest of justice and constitutional order.

This development further intensifies the standoff between Senator Natasha and the leadership of the Senate, spotlighting broader issues of judicial authority, legislative independence, and political accountability in Nigeria’s democratic system.

With the ball now in the court of the Nigeria Police Force and Senate leadership, the country watches closely to see how the situation unfolds.
