Wike

Nigerian politics has long been characterized by shifting loyalties and strategic betrayals, but few figures embody this culture more fully than Nyesom Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. To ignore this reality is to overlook the pattern of severed alliances and discarded mentors that mark his political journey.

 

From his earliest days in public service, Wike has shown a remarkable tendency to turn against those who helped shape his rise. He has consistently alienated his political benefactors — from John Azuta-Mbata and Peter Odili to Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi and even former President Goodluck Jonathan. Each of these figures, at one point or another, placed their trust in Wike, only to be sidelined or outright opposed when their interests no longer aligned with his.

 

Azuta-Mbata gave Wike his first real opportunity in grassroots politics, but their relationship fell apart once Wike’s ambitions grew larger than his mentor’s reach. Peter Odili, once a dominant force in Rivers politics, also saw his protégé drift — or rather sprint — away as soon as his influence waned. Amaechi, perhaps the most prominent example, elevated Wike to the powerful role of Chief of Staff. But that loyalty was swiftly repaid with a fierce and prolonged political feud that fractured Rivers State politics.

 

Even Goodluck Jonathan, who benefited from Wike’s support during his 2015 campaign, eventually became a target. Wike’s clashes with Jonathan’s wife, Patience, and his political repositioning in the aftermath of Jonathan’s presidency, underscored a familiar pattern: Wike’s allegiance is not to people, but to power and opportunity.

 

It is with this history in mind that I urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to tread cautiously. Wike has demonstrated, time and again, that he is loyal only to his own ambitions. He thrives on political conflict, often keeping himself in the spotlight by creating or fueling controversies. His confrontational style and abrasive rhetoric have made him a magnet for drama — both inside his party and in the wider political landscape.

 

As Minister of the FCT, Wike continues to act as if he’s a law unto himself. His aggressive approach to governance, disregard for consensus, and frequent public outbursts not only stir tension but also cast a shadow on the Tinubu administration. The perception is growing that one man — through sheer force of will and controversy — is undermining the image of a president trying to steady the ship.

 

President Tinubu must recognize that enabling Wike’s disruptive presence is not a show of strength but a potential weakness. Every episode of chaos linked to Wike reflects directly on the presidency, and the question
