Kwankwaso Alleges Kano Government Pressuring Officials to Declare Loyalty to APC

Former Kano State Governor and leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has accused the Kano State Government of coercing political officeholders to declare allegiance either to the Kwankwasiyya Movement or the All Progressives Congress (APC). The allegation was made in a video statement shared on Tuesday by his media aide, Saifullahi Hassan. Kwankwaso claimed that local government chairmen, councillors, and some lawmakers were being compelled to sign loyalty registers amid ongoing speculations about Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s possible defection to the APC.
Kwankwaso urged those under pressure not to fear offending him if they refused to comply. He described the situation as troubling, noting that since defection talks began, several officeholders have been distressed, with some experiencing sleepless nights and even hospitalization. The former governor said his advice to them regarding loyalty registers was meant to reduce tension, stressing that the contest for the 2027 elections had not yet started.
Reflecting on the selection of current local government chairmen, Kwankwaso expressed confidence in their ability to continue delivering governance to the people. He revealed that the chairmen were chosen collectively by himself, the deputy governor, party leaders, and local government caucuses, and urged them to continue their work. He also alleged that some caucus members were being followed to their homes with inducements to sway them away, describing it as a harmful development for Kano’s political environment. Kwankwaso concluded by thanking Governor Yusuf for commending his administration while criticizing the previous government led by Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and expressed gratitude to his supporters for their loyalty during the ongoing political uncertainty.
