Togo Seeks Increased Power Supply From Nigeria to Meet Rising Electricity Demand

The government of Togo has indicated interest in expanding electricity imports from Nigeria as part of efforts to address growing domestic energy demand and support economic activities across the country.

The Managing Director of Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), Jennifer Adighije, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday following discussions with officials from Togo’s national electricity utility, Compagnie Energie Electrique du Togo (CEET).

The Togolese delegation was led by the Director-General of CEET, Débo‑K’mba Barandao, who visited Nigeria to strengthen the existing electricity supply partnership between both countries.

Barandao explained that CEET currently purchases about 75 megawatt-hours of electricity from NDPHC under a bilateral supply arrangement, noting that the imported power has played a crucial role in stabilising electricity supply in the country.

According to him, Nigeria’s electricity exports have helped sustain power availability for households, businesses, and public institutions across Togo.

“The imported electricity has played a significant role in sustaining stable power supply and economic activities across Togo,” Barandao said.

He commended NDPHC for maintaining consistent supply under the arrangement, adding that the partnership has improved the reliability of Togo’s national grid and strengthened energy cooperation within the West African region.

Barandao further noted that electricity demand in Togo has risen sharply due to the connection of new consumers, particularly in the industrial and commercial sectors, as well as ongoing government programmes aimed at expanding access to electricity nationwide.

“In view of this development, CEET is strongly interested in increasing the volume of electricity it off-takes from NDPHC,” he said, explaining that additional supply would help support the country’s energy expansion plans and ensure reliable power for newly connected users.

Responding, Adighije reaffirmed NDPHC’s readiness to deepen its collaboration with neighbouring countries by sustaining and potentially expanding electricity exports.

She explained that the company operates several power plants under the National Integrated Power Project, giving it the capacity to support increased regional electricity supply.

Adighije added that the initiative aligns with broader regional energy integration efforts promoted by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which aims to strengthen electricity trade among member states.

She, however, stressed that expanding power exports would require bankable and sustainable commercial agreements between the parties.

“A reliable payment framework will safeguard NDPHC’s interests and enable continued support for regional energy stability through power exports,” she said, noting that credible financial guarantees and structured payment mechanisms would reduce risks associated with cross-border electricity trade.

Both parties described the discussions as productive and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in the electricity sector.

Industry analysts say the move reflects increasing efforts among West African countries to deepen regional power trading as part of broader strategies to tackle persistent electricity shortages, a development also highlighted in reports by Nigerian media outlets such as Punch Newspapers and Vanguard Newspapers.
