Boniface Back in Bremen as Recovery Nears Competitive Return

Super Eagles forward Victor Boniface has returned to Werder Bremen to continue the final stages of his rehabilitation, edging closer to a potential return to Bundesliga action after a knee injury sidelined him since December, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The 25-year-old Nigerian rejoined Bremen on Monday, with the club confirming he will begin individual training on Tuesday. If all goes well, Boniface could resume full-team sessions as early as next week, targeting a comeback to competitive fixtures by late April.

Boniface last featured in a Bundesliga match on December 7, 2025, coming off the bench for 11 minutes in a 3-2 loss to Hamburg. He subsequently underwent knee surgery, which initially threatened to keep him out for the rest of the season. The striker returned to his parent club, Bayer Leverkusen, to continue rehabilitation, posting updates of gym sessions and individual pitch work. In a recent step forward, he trained with Leverkusen’s under-19 squad before moving back to Bremen (The Guardian Sports).

Werder Bremen’s Head of Professional Football, Peter Niemeyer, welcomed Boniface’s return but urged caution. “He will be carefully reintroduced to team training as early as next week. We remain hopeful that he can still make an appearance this season,” Niemeyer said.

Bremen, currently 14th in the Bundesliga and four points above the relegation zone with seven matches remaining, face a crucial period, especially with other attacking options, Keke Topp and Jovan Milosevic, also sidelined through injury. Boniface’s return could provide a timely boost as Daniel Thioune’s side battles to secure top-flight survival (Vanguard Sport).

Before his injury, Boniface had made 11 appearances for Bremen since joining on a season-long loan from Leverkusen, contributing two assists. The striker had initially struggled to cement a regular starting spot in the first three months of the campaign before the knee injury threatened to curtail his season prematurely.

With his recovery progressing steadily, the Nigerian international could yet play a pivotal role in Bremen’s survival bid, providing much-needed firepower in the final stretch of the Bundesliga season.
