Japa: Prioritize National Pride Over Financial Incentives,” Says Akpabio on Emigration

Senate President Godswill Akpabio urged Nigerians to prioritize their love for the country over monetary benefits. Speaking in the senate on Tuesday, he emphasized the importance of retaining skilled individuals within Nigeria.

He noted, “The country is losing valuable expertise. If those who acquire skills return home, it would greatly benefit us.” His remarks came during a discussion addressing the growing trend of Nigerians emigrating in search of better opportunities.

Akpabio pointed to the need for improved working conditions, asserting that loyalty to one’s country should take precedence over financial motivations. “This commitment is why many of us choose to stay,” he added.

He highlighted the detrimental effects of mass migration, particularly in the health sector. “The brain drain poses a significant challenge, impacting not just education but critically our healthcare system. Reports indicate that nearly 22,000 Nigerian health professionals are thriving in the U.S.”

In education, he expressed concern over staffing shortages, stating, “Some departments lack even half their required staff. How can we educate our children under such circumstances? It’s a case of poor input leading to poor output.”

Akpabio reassured that the national assembly will strive to improve conditions for educators, encouraging them to remain in Nigeria and positively influence future g

enerations.
