The government was caught off guard by the fierce opposition to its tax proposals, predominantly led by young Kenyans from the Gen-Z demographic. This resistance reached a peak with dramatic scenes at the parliament, broadcast live on television.

Footage aired on local TV stations showed protesters breaking through barricades and vandalizing the parliament building, which was left with burnt furniture and shattered windows.

In response to the police firing on the enraged protesters, which resulted in multiple fatalities, protest organizers advised people to leave in groups and “stay safe” while heading home.
