Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Information and Strategy, has issued a rebuttal to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s recent criticisms of the military. Atiku, the PDP’s presidential candidate for the 2019 and 2023 elections, had posted a critique on his verified Twitter and Facebook accounts, condemning the military’s approach to recent protests.

Onanuga’s response highlights what he views as Atiku’s diminishing status as a statesman. He criticized Atiku for urging security agencies not to use lethal force against looters and arsonists who have disrupted what was initially intended as peaceful protests. Onanuga contends that Atiku’s criticism overlooks the professional conduct and restraint shown by the security forces amidst severe provocations.

Onanuga emphasized that while Section 40 of the Nigerian Constitution guarantees the right to peaceful assembly, this right is not absolute. Section 45 permits restrictions on such rights in the interest of public safety and order. He praised the Service Chiefs for their balanced approach, reaffirming their constitutional responsibility to maintain order and protect the country’s democracy.

He further accused Atiku of supporting the chaos and destruction caused by the protests, suggesting that his stance is contrary to the interests of national stability. Onanuga urged Atiku to adopt a more constructive approach, similar to opposition leaders in the UK who have supported government efforts to address riots and ensure accountability.

Onanuga’s statement reflects a call for national unity and responsible leadership during times of crisis.
