Tragic Tanker Fire on Lagos-Ibadan Road Claims Life and Devastates Community
A heartbreaking tanker fire on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has resulted in the death of a mother of four and left many others injured and displaced. The incident occurred on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, when a petrol-filled tanker overturned near a local bank.
Witnesses reported that the driver lost control after falling asleep, leading to an explosion that quickly spread flames, damaging homes and businesses within a kilometer radius. The community is now grappling with extensive property damage, including shattered windows, damaged roofs, and cracked walls.
Mercy Emmanuel tragically lost her life in the blaze while trying to escape. Her husband, Ismail Emmanuel, described their desperate struggle for medical assistance and the overwhelming hospital costs. Sadly, Mercy did not survive her injuries.
Another local resident, Bidemi, recounted how a neighbor, Iya Ada, was injured while trying to rescue her children. Iya’s home was severely affected, and she is now hospitalized.
The tanker fire has left the community in ruins, with many residents losing their homes and means of livelihood. Several victims have reached out to Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun for assistance, as many also lost vehicles crucial for their income.
Governor Abiodun has expressed his sympathies to the grieving families and called on tanker drivers to be more cautious on the roads. This incident underscores the pressing need for enhanced road safety measures and stricter regulations to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
