Nigeria’s political landscape has been stirred following a provocative statement by renowned human rights lawyer and former NHRC chairman, Professor Chidi Odinkalu, who asserted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu does not depend on the votes of citizens to secure electoral victory.

According to Odinkalu, real power in Nigeria’s electoral process lies not with the electorate but with key institutions, particularly the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the judiciary. He argued that control and influence over these bodies, rather than popular support, determine who ultimately emerges victorious in elections.

The comment has since triggered widespread debate, with many Nigerians interpreting it as a harsh critique of the country’s democratic integrity and electoral credibility.
