If Elected, I’ll Replace Fighter Jets With Drones — Sowore

Former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has said Nigeria’s security strategy would shift sharply toward drone technology if he ever becomes president.
Speaking on Monday during an interview on Channels Television’s *Morning Brief*, Sowore argued that unmanned aerial vehicles offer a smarter and more efficient solution to Nigeria’s security challenges than conventional military aircraft.
According to him, rather than investing billions in fighter jets that require years of training and heavy maintenance, his administration would focus on deploying drones to combat terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping.
Sowore explained that drones allow for wide-area surveillance with minimal manpower and can be used effectively in hard-to-reach locations. He noted that a small team could operate several drones simultaneously, making real-time tracking of criminals possible.
He added that even relatively low-cost drones are capable of covering several kilometres within minutes, giving security agencies an advantage when pursuing kidnappers and armed groups hiding in forests or remote areas.
“If there’s intelligence that criminals are moving through the bush, drones can be deployed immediately to monitor their movements until ground forces move in,” he said.
Taking his argument further, Sowore remarked that under his leadership, technology would play such a central role in security that drones would effectively become the backbone of national defence.
Beyond security, Sowore said restoring electricity nationwide would be one of his earliest priorities if elected, stressing that reliable power supply is critical to improving safety, productivity, and national dignity.
He said a functional power sector would help create a sense of stability and respect for citizens, while also strengthening security operations across the country.
