“Maguire Reflects on Amorim’s Man United Exit: ‘It Just Didn’t Work Out’”

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has opened up on Rúben Amorim’s short-lived spell at Old Trafford, admitting that despite the manager’s pedigree, the partnership between coach and players ultimately failed to deliver results.
Speaking in an interview with The Guardian, Maguire struck a measured tone, choosing not to criticise the Portuguese tactician while expressing confidence in his future prospects. He described Amorim as a capable manager who is likely to succeed elsewhere.
“I have nothing bad to say about him. I do believe he’ll go on and have an amazing career,” Maguire said, noting that the former Sporting CP boss still has much to offer in the game.
However, the England international acknowledged that things did not fall into place during Amorim’s time in Manchester. He admitted that the players themselves must share responsibility for the outcome, a sentiment that has been echoed in reactions tracked by Complete Sports Nigeria following the interview.
“It just didn’t click or work, and us as players have got to take a lot of responsibility for that as well,” he added.
Amorim arrived at Manchester United in November 2024 with high expectations, having built a strong reputation in Portugal with Sporting CP. His appointment was widely seen as a bold step by the club to reset its football philosophy.
Yet, results on the pitch failed to match the optimism. United struggled to find consistency across competitions, with tactical adjustments and squad adaptation proving more complex than anticipated. Reports from British and Nigerian outlets, including Soccernet.ng, highlighted growing pressure during his tenure as performances dipped.
By January 2026, the club and Amorim parted ways, bringing an end to a challenging chapter that never quite gained momentum.
Maguire’s reflections now offer a glimpse into the dressing room’s perspective, one that points less to individual shortcomings and more to a collective failure to align vision with execution.
