Edo 2024: IGP Suspends Edo State Security Network Activities; Give Reasons

Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has announced a suspension of the Edo State Security Network (ESSN), a state-sponsored security outfit established by Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State. This suspension is effective until further notice.
The IGP’s decision was conveyed during a stakeholders’ meeting on the Edo Governorship Election, held in Benin City, the state capital. The meeting, organized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), is part of the preparations leading up to the gubernatorial election scheduled for September 21, 2024.
Calls for the disbandment of the ESSN have arisen from various groups concerned that the network could be used by the governor to target opposition parties ahead of the election.
